How to find reliable suppliers in China: five channels and how to spot a real factory
FRIDAY, 16 OCTOBER 2026
B2B platforms, the Canton Fair, wholesale markets, agents and visits: the strengths and limits of each channel, and how to tell a manufacturer from a trading company using China's public company register.
How to find reliable suppliers in China? There are five channels: B2B platforms, trade fairs, wholesale markets, sourcing agents and factory visits. The real work starts afterwards, when you need to know whether the company replying is the manufacturer or a middleman, and a public 18-character code lets you check.
Finding names is easy: one search on a platform returns hundreds of offers for almost any product. The hard part is getting down to three or four serious suppliers to compare. This guide covers the strengths and limits of each channel, how to tell a factory from a trading company and what platform badges really guarantee, with a search example from start to finish.
How to find reliable suppliers in China: the five channels
No channel is best on its own. Platforms are fast and cheap but mix producers and resellers; trade fairs let you handle samples but cost travel and time; wholesale markets suit small lots of ready-made goods; agents save time but must be chosen and paid; a factory visit is the strongest check but usually comes last. First-time buyers tend to use just one. It pays to combine them instead: the platform to build a list, the company register and a video call to shorten it, the fair or the visit to decide.
B2B platforms: Alibaba.com, Made-in-China.com, Global Sources
B2B platforms are the quickest starting point. The best known to buyers in Europe are Alibaba.com, Made-in-China.com and Global Sources; 1688.com, part of the Alibaba group, is built for the Chinese domestic market, is in Chinese and works mostly with local buyers. On all of them you search by product, filter by supplier type and request quotes from several companies within hours.
The limit is that the supplier writes its own profile. Many present themselves as manufacturers even when they are trading companies, and factory photos may belong to someone else. So the list a platform produces should be treated as candidates to check, not as a finished selection.
Trade fairs in China: the Canton Fair and sector shows
The China Import and Export Fair, known as the Canton Fair, has been held in Guangzhou every spring and autumn since 1957. It is co-hosted by China's Ministry of Commerce and the Guangdong government, and each session is split into three phases covering different sectors. The 140th session opened on 15 October 2026, runs until 4 November and has about 32,000 exhibiting companies: the second phase, from 23 to 27 October, covers home goods, gifts and decorations.
The advantage of a fair is seeing and handling products from dozens of companies in a single day and spotting quickly who has technical know-how. The limit is that a booth does not show you the plant, and both manufacturers and trading companies exhibit. Alongside Canton there are specialised fairs for single sectors, useful once you know exactly what you are looking for.
Wholesale markets: the case of Yiwu
Yiwu, in Zhejiang province, is home to Yiwu International Trade City, a wholesale market for small commodities open to foreign buyers. In 2014 the city's information office put it at about 75,000 booths on 5.5 million square metres, with more than 1.8 million products; halls are organised by category, from toys and costume jewellery to stationery and home textiles.
It is the right channel for small, mixed orders of existing products, promotional items included. Booth staff are often representatives of a factory or wholesalers, and minimum quantities are lower than a manufacturer's. It is not the channel for developing a custom product with a dedicated mould.
Sourcing agents and factory visits
A sourcing agent finds suppliers on your behalf, speaks the language, negotiates, collects samples and often follows production. Their value depends on two things: that they really work for you and take no commission from the factory, and that they state clearly how they are paid. Ask in writing for the fee and the names of the factories proposed, so you can check them independently.
A factory visit remains the strongest check: you see the lines, the machinery, quality control and the materials warehouse. A real factory usually accepts a visit or a third-party audit; a middleman tends to postpone or offer a partner's plant. When travel is not possible, a live video call from the production floor is the minimum to ask for.
Factory or trading company: how to tell
Every Chinese company has an 18-character unified social credit code, introduced in 2015 by national standard GB 32100-2015. It appears on the business licence and the company seal, and can be checked on the public National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System, gsxt.gov.cn, run by the State Administration for Market Regulation. The record shows the registered name, status, legal representative and business scope: if the name returned does not match the supplier's, that is a warning sign not to ignore.
The business scope says what the company is authorised to do. A factory should list terms such as 生产, 加工 or 制造, meaning production, processing and manufacturing; a trading company usually does not. It is not absolute proof, since a company can register a broad scope, and registered capital does not help. Other clues: a manufacturer specialises in a few categories, a trading company offers everything; a factory sits in an industrial zone, a middleman often in a city-centre office; certificates and test reports normally carry the real manufacturer's name.
A trading company is not necessarily to be avoided: for small volumes or mixed assortments it can be the right choice. The point is to know beforehand, because it adds a margin and a step between you and the producer.
Alibaba: what Verified Supplier and Trade Assurance guarantee
On Alibaba.com the Verified Supplier badge means the supplier has been checked by independent inspection bodies, the platform names SGS and TÜV, covering business licence, production facilities, quality control and research and development capability. It is a good first filter, but it describes the company, not your batch: it says nothing about the quality of the goods you will receive.
Trade Assurance is instead a payment protection: the money goes through Alibaba.com and you can claim a refund if the order is not shipped, goes missing or arrives defective. It applies only to orders paid through the platform: a transfer to bank details given by the supplier outside Alibaba's checkout is not covered, even if the supplier has a storefront on the site.
Find suppliers in China: the steps at a glance
- List: 15-30 candidates from at least two channels, for example a platform and a fair.
- Register: 18-character code checked on gsxt.gov.cn, name and business scope consistent with the profile.
- First contact: written specifications, quantities, required certifications, price and lead times.
- Proof of a plant: video call from the floor, visit or third-party audit.
- Samples: 2-3 final suppliers, paid samples compared against the specifications.
In-depth assessment, from certifications to the questions to ask before signing, is covered in our dedicated supplier evaluation guides.
Practical example: from search to samples in six weeks
A hypothetical company needs 3,000 branded steel water bottles for a corporate event. The figures below are chosen for the example. On two B2B platforms it identifies 24 suppliers and sends all of them the same specification sheet; 14 reply. Checking the code on the register, 4 turn out to have a name different from their profile or a purely commercial business scope, and are excluded or kept in reserve.
Of the remaining 10, 5 accept a video call from the welding and printing area; 3 send paid samples, about 40 euros each plus air freight. Comparing the samples, on lid sealing and logo quality, leads to one manufacturer and one backup. The step that saves the most time is the register check: in one afternoon it removes the profiles that would otherwise have taken weeks of emails.
With La Merce, the search for suppliers in China starts from several channels and always goes through the 18-character code and a check of the plant, so only genuine manufacturers make it to the sample comparison.
