China anti dumping EU: Beijing probes European para-aramid
SATURDAY, 7 NOVEMBER 2026
On 6 November China's Ministry of Commerce opened an anti-dumping investigation into EU para-aramid, after EU duties of up to 67.6% on Chinese polyamide yarns and two new EU investigations in October.
China anti dumping EU: on 6 November China's Ministry of Commerce opened an anti-dumping investigation into para-aramid filament yarn imported from the European Union. It is the high-strength fibre used in optical cables, ballistic fabrics, protective equipment and car components, and the investigation is due to end by 6 November 2027, with a possible six-month extension.
What the China anti dumping EU investigation covers
Para-aramid is a light synthetic fibre that resists heat, cuts and tension. According to the Chinese ministry it is used to reinforce optical fibres and cables, bulletproof and cut-resistant fabrics, and it is found in telecommunications, tyres, the automotive industry, aerospace and sports goods. On the same day Beijing opened a second investigation, into ethylidene norbornene (ENB) from the European Union and Japan: a monomer used mainly to make EPDM synthetic rubber.
The para-aramid case was requested by the Chinese industry, which claims that imports from the EU stayed high from 2023 to the first half of 2026 while prices fell sharply. These are the applicants' claims, not a finding: there is no duty yet. If the investigation ends with a dumping finding, the duties will hit European para-aramid sold in China, not the goods that travel from China to Italy.
The dates of EU-China trade defence
The Chinese investigation follows a series of European measures on Chinese chemical and fibre products. The main dates of recent months are these:
- 28 July 2026: definitive EU anti-dumping duties on Chinese polyamide yarns, from 60% to 67.6%.
- 16 October 2026: the European Commission opens an anti-dumping investigation into Chinese furfuryl alcohol (case AD763).
- 28 October 2026: the Commission opens an anti-dumping investigation into PVDF, a fluoropolymer, from China, India and Japan (case AD764).
- 6 November 2026: China opens the investigations into European para-aramid and into ENB from the EU and Japan.
- 6 November 2027: expected end of the Chinese para-aramid investigation, which can be extended by six months.
What the data show and what they do not
The dates show a sequence, not a declared cause and effect. The Chinese ministry paired the announcement with criticism of European investigations against China, saying the EU must face its own economic and trade problems, but both cases formally stem from complaints by Chinese producers. So they cannot be described as retaliation for one specific measure.
There is also an asymmetry to keep in mind. European measures weigh on companies in Italy that buy in China: polyamide yarns, for example, go into sportswear, hosiery, swimwear and home textiles, and according to the Commission the EU market is worth about 400 million euro, with about 2,000 direct jobs across Croatia, Italy, Spain, Romania and Slovenia. Chinese measures, instead, weigh on those exporting from Europe to China. The para-aramid case points to a climate in which each new European measure may meet a response on the other side, and suggests watching both directions.
China anti dumping EU: what it means for importers
For those buying from China, the 6 November news changes nothing at customs. What changes is where to focus checks, because in 2026 the list of Chinese products under investigation or subject to EU duties has grown. It is worth checking the TARIC code of every material or semi-finished product before ordering, because an anti-dumping duty adds to the ordinary duty and often varies by producer; following open investigations on products you buy, such as PVDF and furfuryl alcohol, because a provisional duty can arrive while the goods are already in production or in transit; writing into contracts who bears any new duty, especially under DDP terms; keeping alternative suppliers ready for the most exposed materials. Those who export para-aramid components or technical fabrics to China should follow the next stages of the Chinese investigation.
Before the order, the duty check
With La Merce, companies buying polyamide yarns or materials such as PVDF and furfuryl alcohol in China check the TARIC code before ordering, and whether the goods fall under an anti-dumping duty already in force or an open investigation, like those the EU launched on 16 and 28 October.
