Truck stoppage in Calabria and Sicily: deliveries at risk from 9 to 20 October
MONDAY, 5 OCTOBER 2026
Fedralog calls two stoppages in Calabria, the second alongside the Sicilian one. The Strait of Messina becomes the critical point for goods bound for the South.
The truck stoppage in Calabria adds to the Sicilian one: Fedralog Calabria has called two 120-hour stoppages, from 9 to 13 October and from 16 to 20 October 2026, and the second coincides with that of the Sicilian Truckers' Committee, confirmed for the same dates. For anyone shipping goods to the South, the second half of October risks becoming a week without deliveries on both sides of the Strait of Messina.
The truck stoppage in Calabria and Sicily: the dates
On 5 October about a hundred heavy vehicles gathered in front of the Cittadella in Catanzaro, the seat of the Calabria Region, in a demonstration organised by Fedralog, also joined by farmers. The same day, in Sicily, the Sicilian Truckers' Committee confirmed its own stoppage, complaining that the Transport Ministry has not yet convened the requested meeting.
- 9-13 October 2026: first trucking stoppage in Calabria called by Fedralog, 120 hours.
- 16-20 October 2026: second stoppage in Calabria and stoppage in Sicily, at the same time.
- 15 million euros: the funding announced by the Calabria Region against high fuel costs, deemed insufficient by Fedralog.
- 0.40 euros per litre: the extraordinary contribution requested by Fedralog on diesel bought in Calabria.
- About 2.40 euros per litre: the diesel price cited by Calabrian and Sicilian truckers.
What the truckers are asking for
In Calabria Fedralog is asking, besides the diesel contribution, for a mechanism automatically linking transport rates to fuel prices, and clarity on how the 15 million announced by the regional president will be distributed. In Sicily the demands remain the known ones: action on diesel prices and payment of the Sea Modal Shift, the incentive for shipping semi-trailers by sea, whose first annual instalment according to the Committee has not yet arrived.
The front is not united. In Sicily the Lega autisti autotrasportatori indipendenti siciliani nazionale (LAAISN) has come out against the stoppages, arguing that they end up harming precisely small operators and producers, with lost perishable goods, missed deliveries and contracts at risk.
Why the Strait of Messina is the critical point
Between 16 and 20 October participating truckers stop on both sides. A large share of goods bound for Sicily by road passes through Calabria and the Strait, while the rest arrives by ferry from central and northern ports: with the two stoppages at the same time, the risk concerns not only deliveries on the island but also the Calabrian leg before them. It is impossible to know in advance how many companies will take part, or whether government action will lead to a cancellation.
What it means for importers
The data does not show that all deliveries to Calabria and Sicily will stop, but it signals two precise windows in which it is worth not having goods travelling south: from 9 to 13 October for Calabria and from 16 to 20 for Calabria and Sicily together. Anyone with orders arriving from northern ports, or containers to clear at Gioia Tauro with a final destination in the South, has an interest in reviewing the schedule now.
Three useful checks. Ask your forwarder whether the carrier for the final leg is taking part in the stoppages. Where possible, bring deliveries forward to before 9 October or move them to after the 21st, allowing a few days of backlog at the restart. And, for goods already in port, assess whether leaving them in storage costs less than a semi-trailer standing idle.
With La Merce, deliveries to Calabria and Sicily in mid-October are planned outside the 9-13 and 16-20 October windows, so goods are not left standing on a vehicle waiting for road haulage to restart.
