China GDP growth 2026: 4.5% in the third quarter, consumption stuck at 1.1%
MONDAY, 19 OCTOBER 2026
Beijing's statistics bureau reports 4.6% growth in the first nine months: industry accelerates to 5.5%, while retail sales and real estate investment remain weak.
China GDP growth 2026 reached 4.5% year on year in the third quarter, up from 4.3% in the second, and 4.6% over the first nine months. China's National Bureau of Statistics released the figures on 19 October: industry is accelerating, domestic consumption remains weak and investment keeps falling.
China GDP growth 2026: the third-quarter figures
The quarterly figure is slightly better than expected: economists polled by Reuters and Bloomberg had forecast 4.4% on average. Gross domestic product for the first nine months reached 107,107 billion yuan; growth rates are calculated at constant prices. The government's target for the whole of 2026 is growth of between 4.5% and 5%.
- GDP in the third quarter of 2026: +4.5% on the same quarter of 2025, after +4.3% in the second quarter.
- GDP in the first nine months of 2026: 107,107 billion yuan, +4.6% year on year.
- Industrial output in September (enterprises above the designated size): +5.5% year on year, against +5.2% in August; +5.3% over the first nine months.
- Retail sales of consumer goods in September: +1.1% year on year, after +0.4% in August.
- Fixed-asset investment in the first nine months: -7.2% year on year; investment in real estate development -20.6%.
Factories growing, consumption almost flat
The picture is a two-speed one. On one side is industrial output, which accelerated for the second month in September and grew faster than GDP over nine months. On the other is domestic demand: retail sales rose 1.1% year on year, a pace far from that of production, and fixed-asset investment is still down 7.2%, or 4.2% excluding real estate.
These figures measure different things and should be read separately. Industrial output shows how much value added leaves Chinese factories, not who buys it. Retail sales measure domestic spending on consumer goods, not prices. The gap between the two series does not by itself prove that factories are pushing harder on exports, but it is consistent with what analysts observe, as they point to exports as one of the main supports of growth this year.
Real estate is still a drag
The steepest decline is still in residential construction: investment in real estate development fell 20.6% in the first nine months. It is the item pulling down total fixed-asset investment and weighing on domestic demand for steel, cement, glass and building materials.
For buyers in China this figure has an indirect effect: when domestic demand for materials and semi-finished goods slows, producers look for outlets elsewhere. The statistics do not say how much of this capacity is going abroad; the figure does suggest a context in which many suppliers have an interest in filling orders from foreign customers.
What it means for importers
Beijing's figures do not change duties, customs rules or shipping times. They do point to some market conditions worth taking into account in negotiations over the coming months.
The first concerns bargaining power. With domestic consumption growing 1.1% and investment falling, many producers of consumer goods, household items and materials have fewer outlets in the Chinese market. For buyers, this suggests room to negotiate on minimum order quantities, payment terms and samples, especially in categories linked to construction and furniture.
The second concerns supplier reliability. A weak domestic market puts pressure on smaller, indebted companies: a price far below the average may hide a supplier in difficulty, with the risk of partial deliveries or undeclared material changes. It is worth checking the company's soundness and setting out late-delivery penalties and material specifications in the contract.
The third concerns production capacity. With industry accelerating, the sectors most in demand abroad, such as electronics, machinery and components, may have busier lines. Booking production early for deliveries in early 2027, close to Chinese New Year, remains good practice.
The outlook for the end of the year
With 4.6% in the first nine months, the annual target of between 4.5% and 5% appears within reach. The question of domestic demand remains open: in the same release the statistics bureau writes that the problem of insufficient domestic demand "remains prominent". Any new consumption stimulus in the coming months could change the balance between the domestic market and exports.
With La Merce, buyers sourcing in China while domestic consumption grows only 1.1% and real estate investment falls 20.6% use the room to negotiate on price and check the supplier's soundness at the factory before signing the order.
